Bagas31: QEMU is a free and open source program that allows you to emulate and virtualize a variety of machines and architectures. QEMU can be used in several different modes.

The most common is the system emulation mode, in which it provides a virtual model of the entire machine (CPU, memory and emulated devices) to run the guest operating system. QEMU can also partner with KVM (Kernel-based Virtual Machine) to run virtual machines at near-native speeds.

Here is a brief description of the main functions of the program:

  • System emulation. You can run operating systems for any machine on any supported architecture. For example, you can run Windows on Linux, or Linux on Windows, or even Linux on an ARM processor. You can choose different CPU, memory, and device models for your virtual machine.
  • User emulation. You can run programs for another Linux/BSD target system on any supported architecture. For example, you can run ARM programs on x86 or x86 programs on PowerPC. You do not need a guest operating system for this mode.
  • Virtualization. You can run KVM and Xen virtual machines at near native speeds. To do this, you need to have a processor that supports hardware virtualization (Intel VT-x or AMD-V). QEMU will use KVM or Xen to speed up the execution of guest operating system code.
  • Additional tools. QEMU has a number of additional tools for working with disk images, network interfaces, USB devices, etc. You can also use QEMU to debug and test your programs or operating systems.

Note: The program runs on any operating system that supports the Java Runtime Environment. The program is free software and is distributed under the GNU General Public License.
