Here is a brief description of the main features of Xfer Records Serum:

  • Wavetable Editor – You can create your own wavetables in many different ways. You can import audio directly from audio files – Serum has different methods and options for analyzing audio and breaking it down into individual waves. You can import single-cycle wavetables, as well as many at once (with built-in sorting options or manual rearrangement). You can morph between different wavetables using standard linear interpolation (crossfading) or harmonic/spectral morphing. You can draw directly on the wave, with optional grid snapping and different shape tools. You can generate or modify waves using FFT (additive). You can create or process waves using formula functions. Processing options allow you to do other tasks you want, such as applying fades, crossfades, normalization, export, and more.

  • Ultra-Pure Oscillators – Wavetable playback requires digital resampling to play different frequencies. Without much care and a lot of calculations, this process will create audible artifacts. Artifacts mean that you are (perhaps unknowingly) filling your mix with unwanted tones/frequencies. Many popular wavetable synthesizers are surprisingly poor at suppressing artifacts – even on a high-quality setting, some produce artifacts as low as -36 dB to -60 dB (the level difference between the pitch and the artifacts), which is clearly audible, and in addition often attenuates the highest desired audible frequencies in the process to try to suppress this unwanted sound. In Serum, the default (native) oscillator playback mode operates with ultra high-precision resampling, producing amazingly inaudible signal-to-noise (e.g. -150dB on a sawtooth wave playing at 1KHz at 44100)! This requires a lot of computation, so Serum’s oscillator playback has been aggressively optimized using SSE2 instructions to provide this high-quality playback without taxing your CPU more than a typical (decent quality) soft synth already does. Load up Serum and we think you’ll notice both what you hear (solid highs extending flat into the audible range) and what you don’t (no unwanted dirt or aliasing—just good, clear sound).
  • Modulation – Work the way you want – The modulation system allows you to drag and drop connections between modulation sources and sinks. Want an LFO that controls the filter’s cutoff frequency? Simply drag the LFO header onto the cutoff handle. This LFO->Filter connection will now appear in the modulation matrix.
  • Filter Types – Serum includes all the filter types found in LFOTool, in addition to some completely new ones. Flangers, phasers, and combo filters, all of which can track the musical note you’re playing. Dual filter types allow you to manipulate or morph between filter types.
  • Built-in Effects – Serum has 10 types of effects that can be placed in any order on the effects stack. Rearrange effects to change the processing order, or drag to remove. Almost all effects parameters are also modulable.
  • Envelope Editor – Serum has an envelope editor for creating your own envelopes or LFOs. You can drag the envelope points or use different shape tools. You can create up to 8 envelopes or LFOs and assign them to any parameter.

Xfer Records Serum is a useful and easy-to-use plugin for creating and editing wavetable synthesis sounds on a Windows PC. It’s designed for professional and amateur musicians who want high-quality sound, a visual and creative interface for working with sounds, and the ability to drill down into details.
